Q: I am probably one of the few students at Emerson who has yet to get a computer (being financially independent isn't always convenient for school), and seeing as how the weekend is the only time I don't have classes, it would be very helpful if the labs could stay open past 6pm on Saturdays. This Saturday, for instance, I had a lot to do during the day and was hoping the lab would be open to type a paper at night. It was not, and now I have to wait till tomorrow. I understand that by being maybe the only student without a personal computer, it is obvious that the demand to keep the lab open with people working there on a weekend night is not very reasonable or totally impossible, but if it were an option, it would help me out a lot. Thanks

Thanks for your message. You are correct about the demand for late weekend hours; Saturday evenings are some of the lowest traffic times for the computer labs. Because we employ students to work in the labs over weekends, it is also a concern for them. Its often hard to find people willing to work late on Saturdays. We do have labs in 120 Boylston and the first floor of the Ansin Building open till midnight on Sundays. Regardless, we do see your concern; Lab Operations especially wants to be available to students without access to their own computers. We plan on looking into extending our hours on Fridays and weekends when the semester approaches Finals time. We'll post updated hours on our website when the time comes.

There are some other options available to you over the weekend, should you find yourself in a similar situation again. The Media Services department has a collection of laptops that are available for weekend reservations. Just stop by the third floor of the Ansin Building, let them know what you need, and they'll do their best to accommodate you. Their hours are available here: http://www.emerson.edu/library/media_services/Hours.cfm

Q: The XML is super sweet! I've noticed a lot of film and new media students are here and we like to use our external harddrives. Can we get some more powerstrips so that we don't have to crawl under our neighbor's desk to plug them in?

A: Thanks for your comments! We've purchased some additional power strips and we'll be installing them soon. Hopefully it will make the XML even more sweet.

Q: I never knew that you had those lab occupancy indicators available online! I love being able to quickly see if the lab is full or not! Thanks!

We're glad you like them! For those who have not yet seen the Lab Stats plugins, just check out any of the individual lab pages - like, the Advanced Projects Lab, for example. Lab Operations uses these statistics often to point students to available lab locations, and we're excited to have public maps for the Emerson community to utilize as well.

We also have pie charts, so that you don't have to check every individual lab page - Lab Availability.
